Alternoon: A Display Font That Earns Its Space
Designer Notes You’ll Actually Use
- Test it in black and white first — no color tricks masking poor contrast or awkward spacing.
- Check readability at actual use sizes: 28px on mobile banners, 48px on printed posters, 14pt on product labels. Alternoon holds up well above 24px, but below 18px, some details blur.
- Drop it onto real mockups — not just white screens. Try it on textured backgrounds, soft gradients, and photo overlays. Its open shapes handle complexity better than many display fonts.
- Compare uppercase vs. lowercase settings side-by-side. Alternoon’s lowercase has more nuance; its caps are strong but less distinctive. Choose based on voice — friendly (lowercase), refined (caps), hybrid (title case with tight tracking).
- Run quick font pairing tests: beside a serif font (e.g., Adobe Garamond), a sans serif font (e.g., Helvetica Now), a script font (for contrast, not harmony), and another display font (to avoid visual competition). Alternoon pairs best with structure — it needs a calm partner, not another personality.
